At The Man Times, FX’s The League is appointed viewing. The ultimate in over competitive, sport based, lad humor. After its 5th season in the US and a 6th already confirmed The League follows the story of a fantasy football league. Don’t be put off by the fact this is American Football, aside from a few names and such the football content isn’t overly heavy and enough for even an absolute novice to get by on.
What makes this programme is the rather excellent cast. Mark Duplass, Nick Kroll, Stephen Rannazzisi, Paul Scheer, Jon Lajoie, and our favourite MILF Katie Aselton are a perfectly assembled cast, joined with a star studded list of cameos, from countless NFL players and legends to Seth Rogan, Adam Brody and Jeff Goldblum. They work together to create moments of sheer comic bliss. When recording the shows the scripts are flexible the comedy is largely improvised around a single premise, actors insert their own Jokes and apply their own style to each show and this helps to create not only a brilliant chemistry between the characters it also makes it damn funny.
Immature in parts, slapstick in others and at times frankly bizarre it plays on the American religion that is Fantasy Football, and when I say religion its estimated some 20 million people in the United States play this game and while The League does a great job playing up to the fan boys it also is completely accessible to the novice with the fantasy football itself often playing second fiddle to the banter and, ridiculous pranks and weird forfeits that come with taking part.
In the UK the show is only available on Netflix and the 5th season is not currently available to view over that platform but we strongly recommend you look it up. The only DVDs available are imports too. It’s not something you’ll watch with your missus, and the phrase “Vinegar Strokes” comes up one too many times to be considered tasteful but this show is man comedy at its finest and we at The Man Times Love it!
